Welcome to

Debalgarh Museum

Debagram Debal Raja Puratatwa O Lokosanskriti Sangha, a registered society, was formed with local support to manage Debalgarh Museum since 2017. It serves as a research hub, conserving artefacts and promoting heritage awareness through recovery and preservation initiatives.

History Of The Museum

Debalgarh, located in Debagram(P.S - Gangnapur), Nadia, is a significant yet unexcavated archaeological site of Bengal. Numerous artifacts have surfaced through agricultural and construction activities. Historical references, including Sandhyakar Nandi’s Ramacharitam (1084–1155 AD), identify it as a Pala-era capital. Recognized in The List of Ancient Monuments in Bengal (1896) and recent studies by Dr. Rupendra Chattopadhayay (2018) and Dr. Biswajit Roy (2021, 2023), experts advocate for systematic research, heritage management, and public awareness to preserve its historical importance.

The launch of the official website of Debagram Debal Raja Puratatwa o Lokosanskriti Sangha marks a significant step in promoting the rich but unexplored archaeological heritage of Debalgarh. Despite its historical significance, the site has lacked systematic excavation or conservation efforts. The Debalgarh Museum, established in 2017, has played a key role in research and education. This website aims to bridge history with modern society, foster awareness, and encourage global collaboration. With community support and scholarly engagement, Debalgarh has the potential to become a major heritage and archaeo-tourism destination.

Message From President

In 1956, partition displaced my family to Debgram, where the ancient 'Deblar Dhipi' fascinated me. Decades later, in 1970, archaeologist Paresh Chandra Dasgupta recognized the site's historical importance, sparking my interest. References to 'Degaye’s Dhipi' in literature and local accounts hinted at a rich past, but the site deteriorated, with mounds eroding and relics disappearing. In 2016, a renewed effort, led by local teacher Sanjay Bhowmik and historian Anirban Basu, revived my passion. A home museum was established, and the Debgram Deblaraja Archaeological Society formed, with Sanjay Bhowmik as the first secretary and myself as president. Teams braved harsh conditions to collect artifacts, with contributions from scholars like Dr. Tilak Purkayastha. Dr. Biswajit Roy, the current secretary, has significantly advanced the organization's work. My hope is that Debalgarh's true history is unveiled, securing its place in Bengal's heritage.
